Modbus Temperature and Humidity Sensor – Model AK2

The AK2 sensor utilizes a Swiss chip from Sensirion, featuring a temperature measurement range of -20 to +85°C and a humidity measurement range of 0 to 100%.

The actual temperature measurement accuracy is ±0.3°C, and the humidity measurement accuracy is ±3%. (According to the Swiss sensor documentation, the accuracy is even higher, but the company’s commitment to customers is within the stated range.)

The sensor’s accuracy makes it suitable for use in server rooms, livestock and poultry farms, mushroom cultivation halls, greenhouses, all types of storage and industrial environments, laboratories, cold rooms, and residential and office buildings.

This device supports two hardware-based communication interfaces:

  • Channel 1: RS485 interface implementing the Modbus RTU protocol, enabling reliable communication over serial networks.
  • Channel 2: Ethernet (LAN) interface supporting Modbus TCP, JSON, and HTTP protocols for network-based communication.

These integrated protocols allow seamless connectivity with a wide range of PLCs, DCSs, and RTUs, as well as any other equipment that supports Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, or JSON communication.

The relays in the AK2 sensor support three different control modes:

  • Mode 1: Controlled via Modbus network
  • Mode 2: Based on ambient temperature
  • Mode 3: Based on ambient humidity

Each relay can be individually configured to operate in any of these modes. For example, one relay can be set to respond to temperature thresholds, while another can be controlled via the Modbus network.

When the relays are set based on ambient temperature and humidity, they operate using a defined range. A temperature “point” is set, for example 25°C, along with a hysteresis value, such as 2°C. Based on this information, the control range becomes 23°C to 27°C.

In thermostat modes, there are two types of operation: heating (increasing) and cooling (decreasing), which are explained in the relevant section.

By default, this display shows the temperature and humidity measured by the sensor. At any time, you can access the menu by pressing the menu button.

The device features a 1.3-inch OLED display and includes four buttons used for configuring the device.

If you intend to use this sensor over a network, you can assign an IP address to the device. By entering the IP address, the web service interface will open, allowing you to perform all configurations through the web service.

One of the key uses of the web service is in scenarios such as an internal Ethernet network in an organization or a refinery, where these sensors are deployed. All settings can be configured remotely through the network.

Moreover, if the environment where you’re using this sensor includes a modem with a valid IP address, by applying specific network configurations, you will be able to remotely access the device’s web service via the internet. This allows you to view temperature and humidity readings and apply any desired settings to the device.

Some PLCs have an RS-485 port, allowing the sensor to connect directly. However, for PLCs without an RS-485 port, the sensors must be connected via RS-485 expansion cards.

Due to the sensor’s casing material, it cannot be installed directly inside a furnace. However, the company can provide the sensor with a half-meter cable, allowing customers to place the sensor circuitry outside while installing the sensor itself inside the furnace.
